The goal of grading your yard is to prepare a smooth level area to lay the sod on. If you leave bumps and dips in the ground, the sod will have bumps and dips and you will have difficulty doing a good mowing job. Taper the edges down 1-1½ inches along walks and driveways to have a nice finished look. Once you are happy with the grade, it is helpful to smooth the surface with a lawn roller. It helps break up small clods and highlights the areas that are low or too high. Grade and roll over until you are satisfied. the roller firms the ground to minimize settling which results in more bumps and dips. A typical lawn roller is heavy enough fo the job. Your goal is to firm the soil, not pack it. |
